Summer hockey league action — LSHL and Da Beauty League

Hockey Friday with The Ice Garden, July 19, 2024

Happy Friday folks! It’s ya girl Alyssa Turner from the Ice Garden. As I sit here writing this in the endless heat wave that this summer has been, the concept of hockey seems so far away. Despite the hockey season and the colder weather being several weeks away, there is still hockey being played.

Despite it being the offseason, we all know that hockey players are freaks of nature and can’t seem to stay away from the rink for too long. That includes the likes of several top tier players in the PWHL and the NCAA who are taking the ice in the women’s divisions of two different summer leagues.

The first one being the Living Sisu Hockey League (LSHL) in Quebec and the second one being the infamous Da Beauty League in Minnesota, which added a weekly women’s game this year for the first time ever in its nine years of existence.

Da Beauty League is a very popular Summer League in Minnesota that is the home to hundreds of NHL players each year. In the past, there would be an occasional women’s game but it was never a guarantee. This year alongside the two men’s games per week, there’s also a weekly women’s game.

There are two women’s teams in Da Beauty League that are riddled with talent. The rosters change on a weekly basis depending on who is available each week but on any given week there’s no shortage of talent as 2024 Walter Cup Champions and U.S. National Team players Grace Zumwinkle, Nicole Hensley, Taylor Heise, Kelly Pannek and Lee Stecklein are usually spending their Wednesdays in Da Beauty League. The most recent Patty Kaz winner and newest PWHL Toronto member Izzy Daniels has been at every game so far this season as well.

Da Beauty League has a handful of untraditional rules that make the hockey itself not only competitive, but also extremely entertaining.

Before this season Da Beauty League only had one single shutout in the league’s existence. Just a few weeks into the season and there have been two shutouts in the women’s division.

Just north of the border there’s another fairly popular Summer League that several NHL players and also top women’s players have been competing in over the years.

The LSHL is hosted in a place that absolutely adores hockey in Montreal, Quebec. Over the last several seasons the league has seen a handful of top tier talent from both the men’s and women’s side of the game.

Marie-Philip Poulin has been a frequent participant in LSHL hockey as well as her fellow Team Canada and PWHL Montreal teammates Laura Stacey, Kristen O’Neill, and Erin Ambrose. Other notable talent on the ice at the Montreal Summer League this season has included Jesse Eldridge, Savannah Harmon, Amanda Boulier, Jade Downie-Landry and many more.

The women’s division of the LSHL hits the ice every Monday throughout the course of the summer and crowns a league winner at the end of the summer. Last year Laura Stacey’s team took home the gold
