Five facts: Rivalry Series

High-five for Year 5

Currently in its fifth season, the Rivalry Series was established by USA Hockey and Hockey Canada in the 2018-19 season. It originally featured three games between the women’s national teams of the two nations. Over the years the series has varied in its length of games from three, to seven, to now five.

Team USA has won the opening game of the Rivalry Series in five out of six games, outshooting Canada 20-11 in opening games.

From coast to coast

The Rivalry Series has been played in 11 different states and five different provinces. The second leg of the 2024-25 Rivalry Series will visit Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the first time in the existence of the series.

Too close for comfort

Since 2018-19 there have been 31 Rivalry Series games. A total of 16 of those games they were decided by one singular goal. For the number-loving people out there, that’s 51.6%.

Oh captain my captain

To nobody’s surprise, both Canada and USA’s captains lead the way for their respective teams in terms of Rivalry Series points and goals since 2018-19.

USA captain Hilary Knight found the back of the net twice in the first three games of this year’s series to give her 15 goals and 12 assists for a total of 28 points in her 30 games played.

It won’t take you long to find Marie-Philip Poulin on the Rivalry Series stat leaders. Captain Canada currently has 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in her 30 games played.

The final two games of the series are set to begin on Feb. 6 in Nova Scotia. From there the fifth and final game will make its way to Prince Edward Island (PEI). This will be the first time that Canada and the United States play in PEI and, with the series lead currently in Canada’s hands with a 2-1 lead, the Canadian crowd will sure be in for a treat.
