Gymnastics media saves the day for NCAA regionals — Aly Raisman speaks to USA Today

The IX: Gymnastics Saturday with Lela Moore, March 30, 2024

Happy Gymnastics Saturday! Conference championships have ended (and so has the Pac-12), and now we’re looking ahead to NCAA regionals next weekend. The regionals draw is set, albeit with a few shuffles to accommodate hosts (and un-accommodate Michigan State, ahem).

I’d like to highlight the importance of independent gymnastics media here: Jenna King, a senior editor at College Gym News (and the mastermind behind Rudi the Roster Robot), pointed out a huge error by the NCAA committee responsible for naming the 12 individual all-arounders and 16 individual event specialists who will compete alongside the top 36 teams at regionals. The committee used season-high scores instead of the highest score that did not go toward the gymnast’s national qualifying score to break the ties, in violation of its own published rules.

After King’s tweet, the NCAA acknowledged the error and announced five additions to the field. It did not name King specifically, but if you’re a gym fan, now you know who to thank for the right field at regionals.
