PWHL signings — Living Sisu Hockey League champ crowned

Hockey Friday with The Ice Garden, Aug. 23, 2024

Hello everyone! My name is Alyssa Turner from The Ice Garden (TIG) and I have the privilege of writing this week’s Hockey Friday.

The signing news in the PWHL was quiet over the last seven days. PWHL Ottawa secured its second overall pick — Canadian national team member Danielle Serdacny — with a three-year contract. PWHL New York announced a three-year contract of its own with the news of goaltender Kayle Osborne signing a deal following her selection in the fifth round of the 2024 PWHL Draft.

Amanda Kessel, who spent the last two seasons in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization was promoted to manager of minor league operations and assistant general manager of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Kessel, a three-time Olympian, was selected by PWHL Montreal in the seventh round of the 2024 Draft which came as a shock to many — and maybe even her — as it was reported that she only had interest in playing for PWHL Boston. With the recent news of her promotion, it seems more and more likely that a return to the ice at the professional level for Amanda Kessel will not be in the cards for the upcoming PWHL season.

In women’s summer hockey league news, the Living Sisu Hockey League crowned its women’s season winner earlier this week. A team led by Gabrielle David of PWHL Montreal came back from a three goal deficit to defeat PWHL New York by a score of 11-3 in the league’s final game. That win completes a back-to-back championship run for the MTL Balance Board.

Laura Stacey and Marie-Philip Poulin’s team would go on to win the consolation game earlier in the evening as well. Laura Stacey buried the game winner in the final while Marie-Philip Poulin added three goals of her own.

Earlier this week the third annual WHKYHAC took place across two days. WHKYHAC is an incredible event. It’s a virtual and free women’s hockey conference. The conference is organized by current and former TIG contributors. Alyssa Longmuir, Carlie Markey and Mike Murphy do a standout job planning this one-of-its kind event.
